Cotton&Hemp Factory Conversion

This old Cotton & Hemp factory is spread over a narrow and long site at the edge of Goksu River in Istanbul. The proposal comprises a series of residential buildings with the preservation of the existing footprint and silhouette. The façade with full height windows is covered with a second envelope of Corten steel –continuing the industrial feeling of the existing development and offering operable shutters to respect the compound’s new use.

The residences overlooking the northern part interlock a different type of open space, while also creating a new typology based on sunken gardens, loggias, balconies and terraces, making the living spaces more attractive to potential inhabitants. Ozge led Eaa design team. The project received Best Future Residential Building award at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in 2017.

The silhouette of the existing buildings was kept with the integration of a second skin with perforated metal.

The second skin, rendering the whole complex as continuous and respecting the historical presence was designed with shutter systems so that the residences can control the privacy level.

In addition to controlling the privacy and sun, the enclosure was incorporated as a strategy to historically preserve the solid feeling of the silhouette while blurring the highly transparent interior building façade.

The residences at the rear side are designed to have sunken gardens for their lower ground levels.

The access to the apartments are through bridges that run over the sunken gardens.
